Dr M R Ghuman obtained his basic medical degree from Rawalpindi Medical College, University of the Punjab, Pakistan but post-graduate degrees from University of the Witwatersrand and Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. He is passionate about Asthma Care and treats complex medical problems in newborns and children.

Chronic Medical Problems
Asthma, Allergy and Eczema are fully diagnosed before starting any treatment. Parents are trained on how to use inhalers with spacers and are taught about the importance of adherence to the chosen drug regimens. They are encouraged and supported to have regular follow-ups of children to keep them symptom free so that they can enjoy sports and other physical activities both at home and at school. It also improves their school attendance and prevents serious side effects of medications used.

Infant Feeding Problems
Most of the population especially first time moms experience great difficulties in initiating breast feeding and easily switch over to formula feeding at very early age of their infants. These mothers are regularly educated, counselled and supported to sustain exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life and continue till the age of 2 years. The working mothers are trained on special breast pumps in consulting rooms to help continue exclusive breast feed their babies while they are at work. HIV positive mothers can also breast feed their babies by using special medications to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV. In selected cases where breast feeding is either contraindicated or not possible advice on selection of appropriate infant formula is provided. Babies with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, colic or constipation may sometimes need special medications to help relieve their symptoms or change their infant feeding choice. In special circumstances like mother with flat nipples or child with cleft lip or cleft palate, special teats and feeding bottles are provided and mothers trained.

Learning Disabilities
Wide range of medical conditions is responsible for learning disabilities in children like Autism, ADHD and Epilepsy. A full neurodevelopmental assessment is first made and then appropriate investigations are instituted to make a final diagnosis of the underlying condition before starting any treatment. An expert team of Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Clinical Psychologist, and Speech Therapist works with Paediatrician to provide the best possible care to help children to do grow to their full potential and enhance their performance at schools.
Meet Dr Ghuman
Dr Muhammad Rafi Ghuman obtained his basic medical degree from Rawalpindi Medical College, University of the Punjab, Pakistan and Post-Graduate qualifications from University of the Witwatersrand and Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. Dr Ghuman works in a state hospital and is honorary academic at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dr Ghuman has a private practice at Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital, world class health care facility in Durban.
Dr Ghuman believes that there is special need to help parents to ensure that their children achieve their full potential as they are the future flag bearers and citizens of tomorrow. He advocates for their wellbeing and stresses that the children need good health, quality nutrition, higher education and appropriate skills training for them to become useful members of a multiracial society of South Africa.
Dr Ghuman is personable and has excellent communicable skills. He is, persuasive and sympathetic when working with children as well as their parents. He is emotionally anchored and has a deep well of patience. He knows his stuff and practice evidence based medicine. He is accommodating, really cares and enjoys working with families. He is passionate about Asthma Care and treats complex medical problems in infants and children.
Dr Ghuman’s research is focused on infant feeding practices and nutrition in childhood. He is the reviewer of South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition for more than 14 years and honorary lecturer and examiner at Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine UKZN.
